It always comes as a shock to someone who is not familiar with Chasefu District the moment one talks about a place called “Mandahill” because the name is highly associated with one of the old and prestigious shopping malls in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia.
Some when they hear of a place called Mandahill in Chasefu the assumption is a busy place with many shops coupled with numerous activities. However this is not the case. The name Mandahill under which the Ward is named has a lot to do with the famous hill situated on the north end of Chasefu District as you enter into Chama District.
The frequently asked question is how the name Mandahill come into existence.
So many stories have emerged with regards to the origin of this name hence posing a challenge on the correct version. According to some locals, the name Mandahill emanate from loss of lives that came as a result of the tribal war between Ngonis and tumbukas on the same hill hence the name, while others claim that the hill use to be a source of mushroom referred to as “Manda” in Tumbuka.
The place is also said to have trenches that are prohibited for anyone to visit and at some point a white man courageously attempted to get into the said trenches to discover what is contained in the same trenches and had not returned ever since.
