Minister of Water Development and Sanitation Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu has officially commissioned the Kapekesa Dam in Chasefu District, a significant milestone in enhancing water security, promoting rural development, and building climate resilience. This landmark project, valued at ZMW 15,508,460.00, fully funded by the Government of Zambia under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, who has prioritized expanding access to water and sanitation services, especially in rural areas.
This infrastructure will have a transformative impact on local livelihoods, food production, and economic resilience, empowering communities to effectively manage natural resources and bolster their adaptive capacity in the face of climate-related challenges.
The Kapekesa Dam commissioning is particularly timely given the 2024 drought’s impact on Zambia’s agricultural sector. This project showcases the government’s efforts to address climate risks and highlights the importance of robust water infrastructure, such as dams, boreholes, and water harvesting systems, to enhance resilience and support sustainable development.
Additionally the Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, reaffirms the Ministry’s commitment to delivering inclusive, equitable, and transformative water and sanitation services, in line with Vision 2030, the 8th National Development Plan, and the Sustainable Development Goals. The minister’s entourage included the provincial permanent secretary for eastern province Paul Thole who urged all the community members to take pride in the project and manage it responsibly.
